Cats are groomed in the separate room to minimise stress and noise.
We prefer to groom cats first thing in the morning so require an 8 am drop off and are sent home as soon as they are finished.
We aim not to sedate cats for grooming. We do have special cat muzzles for the feisty cats. Extremely aggressive cats can be sedate under supervision of a vet and vet nurses
Cats with matted coats – even minor matting which may be present throughout the body’s coat, require extra time and attention, We will not cause stress to your pet by de-matting excessively matted coats and may advise you sedate your cat due to the risks involved in shaving so close to the skin.
Matts can be very difficult to remove and may require your cats to be shaved. Removing a matted coat MAY cause nicks, cuts or abrasions and skin irritations to your cat. After-effects may include itchiness, skin redness and abrasions.
Prevention is the best defence by scheduling regular grooming appointments every 6 to 8 weeks (depending on breed) and performing regular brushing at home in between grooms.
Why Does My Cat Need to be Groomed Regularly?
Cats matt. It is a fact. Whether long hair or short hair, purebred or domestic, they get matted over time. While regular combing will help to prevent the matts, the best defense is a thorough degreasing bath and blow dry. This is where the professional cat groomer comes in.
Cats are naturally oily. Their skin produces oil that spreads throughout the coat if given enough time. Some cats are greasier than others and some become greasier with time, especially if they have certain health issues.
Cats naturally shed. This is true regardless of coat length. In fact, short hair cats usually shed more than long hair breeds. As the hair sheds, the greasiness of the coat makes it gummy enough to cause some of the shedding hair to stick to the hair that is not shedding. This, in turn, creates a small tangle. Usually these small tangles are imperceptible to the eye and with time, hair continues to shed under and around the tangle. Instead of falling away, it sticks to the existing tangle, making it bigger. At this point, it becomes a matt. Several matts can form at one time, in various places on a cat’s body. Eventually, if left to to themselves, these matts will come together to create one giant matt, or pelt. The pelt also begins to pull closer to the skin at this point. If too much time goes by before it is removed, the pelt will be so close to the skin that sores can develop underneath.
